Enoughness as Shared Abundance

a conversation with Toi Smith

Hello, dear listener!

Earlier in this series I shared a conversation I had two years ago with the wise & wonderful Toi Smith: a Growth + Impact Strategist whose work centers on doing life, business, and motherhood differently.

That conversation with Toi was pivotal in helping to shape some of my own thinking about money and enoughness, and I am so grateful that she agreed to join me on the mic again for part 2!

In this second conversation we talk about the ways the question of how much money is enough shifts when you’re a parent, because it feels like such a different question to navigate for me (as a child-free person) vs for Toi (who has four children). How does a person define “enough” if earning more would potentially provide more opportunities and financial relief for their kids? How might someone balance saving for their children's futures with giving to other people’s children who might desperately need that financial support right now? We talk about that, and more, and also dig into Toi’s definition of enoughness as shared abundance which I love so much.

Happy listening :)

Toward the end of the episode you’ll hear us discuss Loving Black Single Mothers, the organization Toi founded that creates ecosystems of care designed to nurture and uplift Black single mothers.

One of those ecosystems is called Holiday Love, where from November to February they will match lower-income Black single mothers with financial partners who commit to gifting between $125 and $500 per month for those four months. I’m so glad to be signed up as a financial partner again for my third consecutive year, and there are a few more days left for you to sign up too if you’d like to join me!

As Toi says, this isn’t charity — it’s solidarity. It’s economic justice in action. It’s love as a verb. It’s collective responsibility and reciprocity.

You can learn more and enroll right here if this calls to you (they are accepting new financial partners through Friday October 11)
