Thank you again so much for having me on your podcast for this amazing conversation. Your ability to facilitate incredible conversations is seriously epic!!
This was really great! Can't wait to listen to the other episodes you recorded. Definitely appreciate the talk about collapse/death/planning for the future.
In terms of death, I’m not so much afraid of being dead. There’s (hopefully) always going to be things I wish I’d done and won’t have managed to do before I die, but I’ve done what I set to accomplish so I’m in what I call my bonus years.
My fear is more about the potential in-between state I could be in, prolonged suffering with limited agency or physical/cognitive ability to either improve on my situation or decide to die. Meaning I’d be stuck in a life that painful. Maybe there is some internalized ableism I need to deconstruct, but just based on the few years when I had a migraine every other day, I can’t imagine how I’d cope with something worse or permanent.
How that links into money for me I don’t know but I’m looking forward to what will come up during the money workshop.
Also as part of working on my will (sloooowww process) I’ve started thinking about power of attorney and what I would want to happen to me if I can’t make decisions for myself. And when I say think I mean I glance at the subject and back away after a second. But I trust that my subconscious is working on it in the background and there will be a time when I’m ready to dive into it.
I loved this episode so much! I've had pretty much the same idea as Carrot regarding end of life plans if/when my quality of life becomes intolerable, but I'm now adding "take a molly and ride my bike off the grand canyon" to my list of options. Also, dark humor aside, last year my dad got approved for "medical aid in dying" drugs, which is California's version of medically assisted suicide, and watching him end his life without any fear or drama really made a huge impact on all of us who witnessed it.
Challenging episode. You both have great voices, here and in your books. You insightfully question life’s realities. Y’all brilliantly shared your feelings. You and Carrot created a powerful podcast. Have y’all looked into the Intentional Communities movement, http://ic.org ? Via the FIC, we recently participated in the course “Aging Gracefully in Community”. Y’all might find the IC movement a potential approach to living today with minimal money and for your “collapse response”. Might look at the real people in “Nomadland” and via @cheaprvliving. Thanks to you and Carrot for sharing your time and minds with us.

Thank YOU! Not one single day has gone by since we talked when I haven't thought about this conversation.

Oh I'm so glad you liked it!! I know I said it in the intro but wow I cannot stop thinking about this conversation.
Love the update on the debt!

"I trust that my subconscious is working on it in the background and there will be a time when I’m ready to dive into it." I *love* this perspective!
I will never be able to not think about this conversation!
Thank you Carrot for saying the things that I think and feel so often (but can’t confidently say out loud).
Nicole, the space you’ve created here is so needed and so very cherished. Xxx
I'm so glad to know that this conversation will live forever in someone else's brain because that is exactly what is happening in mine!!
