Each month, for paid subscribers, I share what’s been working well in my life plus a curated list of links to what I’ve been reading, listening to, watching, and cooking.
In the comments I can’t wait to hear what’s been working well for you, plus your own links & recs!
What’s Working
Early morning writing sessions. Actually taking the time to make a meal plan each week. Afternoon naps. Big earrings. Using toe spacers and a rock mat to help strengthen my feet. Dinners by candlelight. Watching the dogs chase each other around the yard. Being realistic about what I will/won’t do (in every area of my life). Not making promises I can’t keep. Altar building. List-making. Deep breathing. Remembering all the tools I already have, and turning to them. Thinking about all the people I am so grateful to love, and telling them. Trying to move through my life one moment at a time.
Reading, Watching, Listening
My two favorite novels of the past month were Margo’s Got Money Troubles, by Rufi Thorpe and The Wedding People, by Alison Espach — truly loved them both!
For everyone who vibed with me writing about how I’m calling in more “radical anarchist witch energy” in my life right now: might I recommend the book Practical Anarchism, by Shuli Branson, as well as her podcast interview on Gender Reveal.
I continue to enjoy surrounding myself with stories of people pursuing big, wild athletic goals. Like: This docuseries about Simone Biles. Season 2 of Sprint. This interview with Dan Hobbs, a guy who spent seven years obsessed with the goal of climbing all 58 of Colorado’s 14ers faster than anyone else. This documentary about Karel Sabbe breaking the supported speed record on the PCT (and then this thoughtful podcast interview all about the mental aspect of it). Ugh, so good.
I am really reflecting on the prompts that Toi Smith shared in a recent newsletter on building alternative futures, where she asked:
Who are you truly connected to? (beyond your nuclear family)
Who do you share with? (beyond your nuclear family)
Who are you accountable to? (beyond your nuclear family)
Who relies on you, and who do you feel responsible for? (beyond your nuclear family)
